Read the number with its conditions
Read the rating alongside the technical footnote and the model’s manual. Finding “water resistant” in a sales title is not enough. Record what is declared, under which conditions and which activities are excluded. A swimming feature does not replace these instructions.
This guide sets no safe operating depths and promises no permanent seal. It explains documents rather than comparing immersion test results.

One example: two ratings on the same page
Samsung Spain declares 5ATM and IP68 for Galaxy Fit3. Its notes distinguish the test associated with 5ATM from IP68 protection, specified for fresh water up to 1.5 m for 30 minutes. It also excludes diving and high-pressure water activities.
Do not add the figures or choose whichever appears more favourable. They are declarations with different conditions. A test limit is not a recommended operating depth; keep the manufacturer’s exclusions beside the figure.

Care rules do not transfer between models
The Forerunner 165 manual says to avoid pressing buttons underwater and to rinse with fresh water after exposure to chlorine or salt water. These instructions belong to that model; they neither authorise an activity on their own nor describe every Garmin watch.
Also check charging, strap and cleaning instructions for your reference. Changing a strap does not change the watch body’s declared rating. If the manual is missing or retailer and manufacturer disagree, leave that use unconfirmed.
