First decide what you want to record

Running without carrying your phone can mean two different things: not looking at it during the run, or leaving it at home. To choose a device, first write down what you need to save: session time, estimated distance or a route to review later. A list of sport modes does not answer that question. Nor does the name “smartwatch” guarantee that a device can locate itself independently.

Before buying, try what you already own on a familiar walk. Note whether you need to check pace while moving or just review the route afterwards. If you always carry a phone for communication or safety, you may not need another receiver. If you want to leave it at home, explicitly check built-in GPS, starting an activity and local saving. That use decision matters more than an extensive feature list.

Connected and built-in GPS: different dependencies

Connected GPS uses the phone’s location. Garmin documents this behaviour for vívosmart 5, and Xiaomi explains that Smart Band 10 depends on the phone to record a route. Built-in GPS puts the receiver in the device: Xiaomi documents it for Smart Band 9 Pro and Garmin for Forerunner 55. “Connected” does not mean built-in; nor should you transfer a Pro edition’s feature to the standard edition. This guide uses GPS as the familiar term for satellite positioning; GNSS includes GPS and other systems. Xiaomi’s page uses the term built-in GNSS.

These differences concern position recording, rather than every function. A device with built-in GPS may need its app for setup or transferring an activity afterwards. Before leaving without your phone, check which steps work offline and which need synchronisation. Do not read built-in GPS as calls, messages, emergency assistance or access to maps. Those are separate capabilities to check individually for the specific model.

Compare conditions, rather than accuracy promises

The table summarises use decisions and documented examples; it does not rank brands for accuracy. Two recordings of the same route can differ, and a specification sheet does not prove which device measures better in your surroundings. A product advertising several satellite systems still needs suitable reception conditions. Dual frequency can be a technical criterion, but it does not justify promising a perfect route.

To assess your needs, think about the information you will use afterwards. If you only want to remember duration and how often you go out, a detailed map may be unnecessary. If you compare routes, check how points and pauses appear. Do not turn a jump in the track into a conclusion about fitness. Keep the session’s context, and consult the manual when the recording does not match what happened.

Swipe the table to see all columns. With a keyboard, focus the table and use the arrow keys.

Try a short session before relying on the recording

Try a short outing with the device you already use. Check that you can select the sport, wait for the position indication when relevant, start, pause and save. Then check that a saved activity exists and the route reasonably matches your outing. This is a functional check for your own use, rather than a laboratory test or an accuracy certification.

For a connected system, review permissions and the manufacturer app’s running requirements using its current documentation. For a built-in system, confirm local saving without the phone and later transfer. Repeat the trial if you change phone or configuration. Keep communication and navigation needs separate: leaving the phone behind for route recording does not remove the safety decisions involved in an outing.

Editorial guidance

Turn recording into a consistent sporting routine

Practical value comes when recording helps you repeat an activity you enjoy. You can use SportLoop to follow your activities, progress and challenges, keeping regular training at the centre. This guide does not claim that SportLoop automatically imports data from these watches, or that a direct integration with Garmin, Xiaomi or another manufacturer exists. Check the functions that actually appear in your app.

If you already have a clear recording method, use it before adding another device. Check readability, controls, charging conditions and saving separately. The examples cited here are documentary: we have not physically tested them. Review the exact commercial variant and manufacturer limitations before making a purchase.

Methodology

Prepared with Codex assistance. Automated checks do not replace the owner’s editorial approval or any required specialist review.

  • Selection of a specific use intention distinct from the general step-counting guide.
  • Primary manufacturer documentation consulted on 14 October 2026; documented specifications separated from editorial criteria.
  • Original text and translations prepared with artificial-intelligence assistance; documentary checks without product testing.
  • No physical tests or comparative accuracy measurements. Individual commercial checks are managed separately in the candidate registry and do not constitute editorial approval.

Limitations

  • Functions may depend on model, variant, phone, configuration and firmware version.
  • Battery life, accuracy, readability and glove operation are not guaranteed in every condition.
  • Integration of these devices with SportLoop has not been verified.
  • No prices, stock, availability, commercial ratings or automatic product approval.
