Define what you are comparing

The question is not which tool wins in every case, but which format fits the practice you have planned. A dumbbell has a handle between two ends; a kettlebell combines a body and an upper handle. Geometry alone does not determine exercises, technique or load. Before comparing, record whether the offer contains one item or a pair, a fixed mass or an adjustable system. The hexagonal dumbbell consulted is offered individually. An advertisement showing two pieces does not replace the package description. Nor should you compare the total weight of a set with that of a single item.

Measure the use and storage space

Measure where you will store the equipment and the space needed to take it out and put it away. Include a base, separate plates or a stand if they belong to the system. A design that looks compact in a photograph may be awkward in a particular cupboard. Compare full dimensions rather than handle width alone. Storage should avoid obstructions in walkways and comply with manufacturer instructions. The criteria table helps prepare this decision; it does not calculate a safe exercise area or validate the strength of furniture, a shelf or the flooring.

Swipe the table to see all columns. With a keyboard, focus the table and use the arrow keys.

Editorial guidance

Grip requires information, not a photograph

To assess a handle, look for usable length, diameter when documented, finish and the space inside the handle. Do not judge comfort by the adjective ergonomic or by a picture featuring a reference hand. If a description gives two different diameters, retain the discrepancy as pending instead of choosing the convenient number. Grip feel needs personal checking; a documentary review cannot measure it. Also consider whether the instructions permit the intended use with one or two hands. A different shape may require a different technique, but this guide does not teach movements or certify that a format suits every user.

Fixed or adjustable: maintenance changes too

A fixed weight and an adjustable one require different checks. For an adjustable model, identify the mechanism, the elements that must be secured and the instructions for checking assembly. The DOMYOS range consulted distinguishes a 12 kg base from additional weights. Do not translate the family's maximum range into the contents included in a purchase. Keep the manual reference and list of authorised parts. If a connection does not operate as instructed, withdraw the equipment from use until competent support resolves it. Do not adapt plates, locks or replacement parts from another range simply because they appear to fit. A fixed weight lacking adjustment still needs inspection.

Check flooring, accessories and cleaning

An exercise mat must not automatically be advertised as sufficient protection for dropping a weight. Check the floor, equipment instructions and intended protective accessory separately. A rubber covering does not guarantee freedom from marks, noise or damage on every floor. For cleaning, identify the exact reference's materials and follow its instructions, including drying and storage where applicable. Do not copy one mat's treatment to another, or use a material statement to invent resistance to a chemical cleaner. The gripping surface, covering and connections should be inspected as different parts, without concealing wear beneath superficial cleaning.

Documented example: a fixed 4 kg kettlebell

The 4 kg Sveltus, reference 1150 and commercial model 1150_4 kg, makes the comparison concrete: it is a fixed-weight item sold individually. The manufacturer lists cast iron and vinyl. This describes a format and materials; it does not establish a better grip or prove that the covering protects every floor.

One 4 kg item is not equivalent to a pair of dumbbells weighing 4 kg each. Nor does it provide an adjustable model’s weight-changing mechanism. Use this example to check package contents and separate mass per item, total mass and dimensions. The 4 kg figure identifies this variant; it is not a suggested starting load or an assessment of difficulty. Its handle, balance and behaviour during exercises have not been measured.

Editorial guidance

From specifications to a verifiable decision

Before deciding, write down six fields: exact reference, mass per item, item count, full dimensions, mechanism and care manual. When comparing a pair with a single item, retain both quantities in separate columns. If handle measurements or package contents are unclear, the question remains open: a photograph cannot settle it. Load selection and learning the movement require guidance suited to your situation, outside a commercial table. Discover SportLoop, the sports application at the centre of this website. Methodology

Prepared with Codex assistance. Automated checks do not replace the owner’s editorial approval or any required specialist review.

  • Primary sources consulted on 18 October 2026 through their public pages and web index; examples document formats and contents without physical tests.
  • The table compares purchase criteria, without rating comfort, safety, durability or effectiveness. Measuring and organisation suggestions are editorial criteria.
  • Descriptions of formats, materials and package contents are checked against the identified references. Dynamic prices, stock information and ratings are not included.

Limitations

  • There are no original measurements, grip tests or checks of floors or furniture.
  • No personal mass, routine or technique is prescribed; use the manual and competent guidance.
  • This comparison does not guarantee sporting results or make a purchase a condition of using SportLoop.
